Look to the helpers
Amidst the devastating wildfires in Maui, people have been joining forces to help each other.
Residents and tourists are handing out water, clothing and other items to those who've lost their homes. Restaurants are cooking and serving meals for anyone who's hungry. And reputable charities are raising money to offer immediate assistance and to rebuild the areas that the fires destroyed.
I'm going to highlight just one such group: the Maui Humane Society. Since the blazes first sparked on Aug. 8 and began to spread, the folks at the humane society have worked tirelessly to rescue animals and treat the injured. A team of staff and volunteers have provided medical attention, fluids, food and comfort to the animals that have been brought to their triage centers.
According to Dr. Lisa M. Labrecque, who took over as CEO of the humane society on July 19, an estimated 3,000 pets became lost due to the fires. So each day, the organization’s disaster response teams have gone out…
