A solution for pollution
Lake Maracaibo, one of the world’s largest and oldest lakes, is terribly polluted. Chemicals, fertilizers, untreated wastewater and trash have contaminated its waters, which is home to endangered species such as pink river dolphins, loggerhead sea turtles and manatees. Pipelines run under the lake and often leak oil into it. And blue-green algae grows within its dark waters, causing mass fish die-offs.
Although those in power are doing little to solve or even acknowledge the problem, environmentalists like 28-year-old Selene Estrach, are determined to help. She founded Proyecto Sirena, a national network of activists that is collecting hair to soak up the sludge:
Volunteers across Venezuela have been holding haircut drives to save the lake and so far, thousands of people have participated. Even pet hair has been donated to the cause.
